Zero 7 wrote and produced the track for the duo’s debut album Simple Things, then brought in Sophie Barker to help finish the lyrics; Sia and Sophie Barker supplied the featured vocals on the single version. The song grew out of the same early-2001 creative period as the rest of the album, and it was issued as a single on 30 July 2001 in the New State Music release. The single became Zero 7’s breakthrough hit, reaching No. 30 on the UK Singles Chart and spending three weeks on the chart. Official Charts later identified it as the duo’s Top 40 hit and one of the key songs that introduced their chilled, downtempo sound to a wider audience. “Destiny” remained Zero 7’s signature track and the song most associated with Sia’s early collaboration period, later appearing in film and continuing to draw streams and catalog attention. Its enduring profile helped keep Simple Things in circulation as a modern chill-electronic touchstone.
