Serge
The Folk Implosion · 1999Recording
It was recorded for One Part Lullaby during the 1998–1999 sessions, with Lou Barlow and John Davis working alongside Wally Gagel in home-based recording setups. The track builds around a Serge Gainsbourg sample from “Requiem Pour Un Con.” On One Part Lullaby, it gave the album a distinctive instrumental centerpiece, and contemporary reviewers described it as a spaghetti-Western-style theme. Its placement helped show how far the Folk Implosion had moved from the scruffier sound of their earlier work. It remains one of the album’s most recognizable deep cuts, mainly because of its unusual instrumental character and explicit Gainsbourg connection. Sampling databases also show it being sampled by Haircuts for Men in 2016.
