To Be Real

Cheryl Lynn · 1978
Recording

Recorded in Miami for Cheryl Lynn’s self-titled debut album, with production by David Paich and Marty Paich. The single was cut at Criteria Recording Studios and issued as Lynn’s breakout debut for Columbia. Released in 1978, it turned Cheryl Lynn into a major crossover star and became one of disco’s most recognizable anthems. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B chart. The track remained a durable dance-floor standard and was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Its hook and groove have continued to circulate through covers, samples, and club play for decades.
