Dan De Lion
Don Drummond · 1969Recorded in Kingston in 1969 at Treasure Isle Recording Studio for producer Arthur "Duke" Reid, with Don Drummond on trombone and the Skatalites’ classic session personnel around him, including Jackie Mittoo, Johnny "Dizzy" Moore, Lloyd Brevett, and Lloyd Knibb. It was one of the standout instrumentals from Drummond’s posthumous Treasure Isle recordings and became a showcase for his mournful trombone voice. The track has also been singled out in later reissues and retrospective writing as a highlight of the Skatalites era. The tune remains one of the best-known Don Drummond instrumentals and is regularly reissued and anthologized on Skatalites compilations. It continues to circulate as a touchstone of early Jamaican instrumental music and Drummond’s compositional catalogue.
