My Girls

Recorded in 2008 during the Merriweather Post Pavilion sessions at Sweet Tea Recording in Oxford, Mississippi, with Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist working with producer Ben H. Allen. The track was built from layered vocals, electronics, and sampled percussion rather than the guitar-centered setup of earlier Animal Collective records. Released by Domino in 2009, My Girls became Animal Collective's breakthrough single and the most widely recognized song from Merriweather Post Pavilion. It was central to the album's exceptional critical reception and helped move the band from experimental underground prominence into broader indie visibility. The track remains Animal Collective's signature recording and one of the defining independent music singles of the late 2000s. Its vocal layering and euphoric electronic arrangement became a touchstone for later indie and electronic pop production.
