Crooklyn
Masta Ace · 2015Recording
Recorded in 1994 for Spike Lee’s Crooklyn soundtrack by the Crooklyn Dodgers lineup of Masta Ace, Special Ed, and Buckshot. Production was credited to A Tribe Called Quest, with the track made specifically for the film. The track served as the standout original rap record from the Crooklyn soundtrack and functioned as a Brooklyn anthem for the film’s neighborhood-centered story. It became one of Masta Ace’s best-known early-1990s records and was issued by MCA in 1994. “Crooklyn” remains the defining record associated with the Crooklyn Dodgers name and is still cited as a classic Spike Lee soundtrack cut. Its production and sample-heavy style kept it in circulation through later references, remixes, and lists of essential 1990s hip-hop.
