Shan & Shan

Smiley Culture · 1984
Recording

Issued in 1984 as the flip side of "Police Officer" on Smiley Culture's Fashion Records 12-inch, the track drew on the Delroy Wilson song "Run Run" as its rhythmic source. It was part of the same early run of releases that established David Emmanuel as one of the defining voices of UK dancehall. The track helped extend Smiley Culture's rapid-fire London dancehall style beyond the novelty-hit frame and into the core British reggae scene. Its coupling with "Police Officer" made the single a recognizable Fashion Records release among UK reggae fans. "Shan & Shan" has remained a cult Smiley Culture cut, regularly resurfacing in reggae mixes and specialist selections. It continues to be remembered as part of the Fashion Records era that shaped British dancehall's crossover profile.
