My Perogative

Sanchez · 1988
Recording

Recorded in Jamaica during the late 1980s and released as Sanchez's reggae interpretation of Bobby Brown's hit 'My Prerogative'. The recording paired Sanchez's smooth vocal style with a dancehall-reggae backing produced for the Jamaican market. The single demonstrated Sanchez's ability to adapt contemporary R&B material into a reggae format while retaining its commercial appeal. It became popular with sound systems and helped reinforce his reputation as one of dancehall and reggae's leading singers. The recording remains one of the better-known examples of Sanchez's approach to reworking international pop and R&B songs for reggae audiences. It continues to appear on compilations highlighting the crossover between dancehall, reggae and mainstream popular music.
