Ting-A-Ling
Shabba Ranks · 1992Recorded for X-tra Naked in Kingston, Jamaica, with additional sessions at other New York and Jamaica studios used across the album. The track is credited to Shabba Ranks, Cleveland "Clevie" Browne, and Wycliffe "Steely" Johnson, and the released track credit lists Browne and Johnson as producer-mixers. Released in 1992 on X-tra Naked, the track helped define Shabba Ranks’ early-1990s dancehall crossover and became one of his signature songs. The album won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, and the song is widely treated as a standout from that era. The song has remained a touchstone in dancehall and has been sampled, interpolated, and covered by later artists, including A$AP Ferg, Drake, Wale, Tai’Aysha, and Vybz Kartel. Its riddim and chorus have given it lasting influence well beyond its original release.
