Very Ape

Little Roy · 2011
Recording

The track is a 2011 Little Roy cover of Nirvana’s “Very Ape” from the album Battle for Seattle, produced by Prince Fatty and Mutant Hi-Fi and mixed at Miloco’s The Ironworks in London. The album also featured veteran Jamaican players including Junior Marvin, Bubblers, and Leroy “Mafia” Heywood. It appeared on a reggae reinterpretation of Nirvana’s catalog released as the band’s twentieth-anniversary tributes were circulating, with the album specifically drawing attention for taking on both major hits and deeper cuts like “Very Ape.” Reviewers framed the record as a respectful crossover between reggae culture and Nirvana’s legacy. The cover helped make Battle for Seattle a cult title among reggae listeners and Nirvana fans, and “Very Ape” remained part of the album’s ongoing reissues and later dub versions. Its reach comes from turning a deep In Utero track into a reggae standard in Little Roy’s catalog.
