Lou Pride · 1972
Recording

Lou Pride recorded the original single in the early 1970s for Suemi Records, the El Paso label owned by Kenneth Smith. The record is associated with the Suemi studio in El Paso, and Smith is credited as producer. The track was released as Pride’s debut 45 and became a major Northern Soul favorite. Its rarity on the small Texas imprint and its strong horn-driven arrangement helped turn it into a cult floor-filler in the UK club scene. It remained Pride’s best-known song and was later reworked by Pride himself for a new 7-inch issue in 2022. The song continued to circulate on Northern Soul compilations and revival releases, keeping it central to his reputation.
