Recording

Tumblack recorded Caraïba in France in the late 1970s with a French and French West Indian studio group built around Yves Hayat. The recording featured players associated with the Paris session and Antillean dance-music network, including Wally Badarou and Sauveur Mallia. Caraïba first appeared on Barclay in 1978 and was later issued on Island in 1979. The record connected Gwo ka-rooted Caribbean percussion with European studio disco and became a specialist DJ title. Caraïba remained a collector and selector favorite through bootlegs, DJ circulation, and later licensed reissue activity. Its reputation rests on its heavy percussion, synth work, and links to the early development of zouk-adjacent French Caribbean dance music.
