I Will Survive
CAKE · 1996CAKE recorded “I Will Survive” during the 1995–1996 sessions for Fashion Nugget at Paradise Studios in Sacramento. The band produced the album, with Craig Long, Kirt Shearer and Joe Johnston credited as engineers and Scott Reams as assistant engineer. Released on Fashion Nugget in 1996 and issued as a single in 1997, the track recast Gloria Gaynor’s disco standard in CAKE’s deadpan band arrangement. It became one of the album’s most recognisable songs after “The Distance” and helped establish the group’s reputation for laconic, off-centre reinterpretations. The recording remains CAKE’s best-known cover and a durable alternative-era version of a pop standard. Its film and television placements kept it visible beyond the original Fashion Nugget campaign and made it a defining part of the band’s catalogue.
