Girl You Need a Change of Mind

Eddie Kendricks · 1972

Recording

Eddie Kendricks recorded Girl You Need a Change of Mind in January 1972 for the Tamla album People...Hold On, using the Young Senators as his backing band. The track was produced by Frank Wilson and Leonard Caston Jr., with David Leacraft and LeRoy Fleming credited as arrangers on later single issues. The track became a landmark underground dance record in New York clubs despite only modest pop-chart performance. Its extended structure, breakdowns and driving rhythm made it a widely cited prototype for disco before the genre was commercially defined. Girl You Need a Change of Mind remains one of Kendricks's most influential solo recordings. Its club reputation, later D'Angelo cover and frequent placement in histories of early disco kept the song central to 1970s soul and dance scholarship.
