Girl You Need A Change Of Mind (Album Edit)
Eddie Kendricks · 1972Recorded in January 1972 at Motown's Hitsville and Golden World studios in Detroit, 'Girl You Need a Change of Mind' featured Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals, backed by the Washington, D.C. ensemble the Young Senators, including bandleader Jimi Dougans. Written by Leonard Caston Jr. and Anita Poree, the recording was produced by Frank Wilson and Caston, with arrangements credited to Leroy Fleming, David Leacraft and David Van De Pitte. Originally released in May 1972 on Kendricks' album People...Hold On for Tamla Records, the extended recording became an influential underground dance-floor favourite in New York City, particularly at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Issued as a two-part single in January 1973, it reached number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 13 on the R&B singles chart, establishing itself as an important precursor to the emerging disco movement. The recording became a foundational selection in early New York dance culture, celebrated for its extended instrumental passages, rhythmic breakdowns, orchestral arrangements and Kendricks' distinctive falsetto. Its influence continued through later interpretations, including D'Angelo's 1996 cover for the film Get on the Bus, while Rolling Stone recognised it among the 100 greatest Motown songs.
