You Can't Turn Me Away
Sylvia Striplin · 1981Recorded during 1980–1981 sessions for Give Me Your Love at Artisan Sound in Hollywood, Electric Lady in New York City, and Sigma Sound in New York City. Roy Ayers and James Bedford produced the sessions, with Striplin backed by Ayers’s studio circle and the album personnel that included Nathan Lamar Watts, Dennis Davis, Philip Woo, Justo Almario, and William Allen. Released on Roy Ayers’s Uno Melodic label in 1981, the track anchored Striplin’s only album and helped define the label’s sleek rare-groove sound. It became a cult favorite rather than a chart record, with later listeners treating it as one of the album’s signature cuts. The song has remained a staple of rare-groove, hip-hop, and quiet-storm digger culture. It was sampled by Junior M.A.F.I.A. on "Get Money," reworked by Erykah Badu on "Turn Me Away (Get MuNNY)," and surfaced in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
