Fortunate Son

Fortunate Son

Creedence Clearwater Revival · 1969
Recording

Recorded in 1969 at Wally Heider Recording in San Francisco, the track was written and produced by John Fogerty and engineered by Russ Gary. The band recorded the instrumental backing together before Fogerty added his lead vocal and overdubs. Released alongside Down on the Corner, the song attacked the class privilege that shielded wealthy and politically connected Americans from military service. It became a defining protest anthem of the Vietnam War era. Its enduring criticism of privilege has carried the song beyond its original wartime setting. The Library of Congress selected the recording for the 2013 National Recording Registry.
