Spirit · 1968
Recording

Recorded from 31 August to 17 November 1967 during sessions for Spirit's debut album, with Jay Ferguson, Randy California, John Locke, Mark Andes, and Ed Cassidy. Lou Adler produced the recording, with Marty Paich credited for string and horn arrangements on the album sessions. Released by Ode Records in 1968 as the opening track on Spirit, Fresh-Garbage introduced the band's mixture of rock instrumentation, jazz-trained playing, and topical writing. The parent album reached number 31 on the Billboard 200 and established Spirit as one of the more distinctive Los Angeles bands of the period. Fresh-Garbage remained one of Spirit's best-known early album tracks and gained further recognition through its inclusion on The Rock Machine Turns You On. Led Zeppelin also drew on the song during live versions of As Long as I Have You, extending its reputation among later rock collectors.
