Recording

The Moody Blues recorded “The Best Way To Travel” on 28 May 1968 during the In Search of the Lost Chord sessions at Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London. Mike Pinder wrote the song, sang lead vocal, played Mellotron and acoustic guitar, and was joined by Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge, with Tony Clarke producing. Released by Deram in July 1968 as part of In Search of the Lost Chord, the track captured the band’s late-1960s studio experimentation with stereo panning, Mellotron texture and psychedelic travel imagery. It became one of Mike Pinder’s key compositions on the album rather than a standalone chart single. The track remains a recognised deep cut from the Moody Blues’ classic 1967–1972 period and a showcase for Pinder’s Mellotron-led writing. Its inclusion on later psychedelic compilations reinforced its status as one of the band’s notable acid-era album tracks.
