Heart of Gold

Neil Young with The Stray Gators · 1971
Recording

The track was recorded in February 1971 at Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville during the Harvest sessions with Neil Young, Ben Keith, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey. Elliot Mazer and Young produced the recording, with James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt adding backing vocals. Released as a single in 1972, it became Neil Young only number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the central single from Harvest. The song helped make Harvest one of the most successful singer songwriter albums of the early 1970s. It remains one of Young signature songs and one of the most recognizable acoustic recordings of his catalogue. The track has endured through covers, film and television use, and its association with Young mainstream breakthrough.
