Charles Earland · 1970
Recording

Charles Earland recorded 'Milestones' live at the Key Club in Newark, New Jersey, with a band featuring Gary Chandler on trumpet, Grover Washington Jr. on tenor saxophone, Maynard Parker on guitar, Jesse Kilpatrick on drums, and Buddy Caldwell on congas, engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. Released on Earland's 1971 Prestige album Living Black!, the track demonstrated the soul-jazz organ idiom's capacity to absorb Miles Davis's modal language, placing the tune in a gritty live-club context that connected the jazz tradition to Black urban audiences of the early 1970s. The recording is notable as an early document of Grover Washington Jr.'s fully formed tenor voice before his breakthrough as a leader, and the version became a touchstone of Earland's live repertoire that he revisited across decades of performance.
