Horace Silver · 1969
Recording

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 25, 1961, with the classic Horace Silver Quintet featuring Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums. The title track of Silver's 1961 Blue Note album became one of his most celebrated hard bop compositions, exemplifying the bluesy, funky piano-led quintet sound he had spent the previous decade perfecting and cementing his reputation as the defining voice of funky hard bop. The track has been covered extensively and sampled widely across hip-hop and soul music, and its title entered jazz vocabulary as shorthand for the earthy, blues-drenched groove that Silver pioneered; it remains a staple of jazz education curricula and jam sessions worldwide.
