Recording

Recorded on 24 October 1963 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Willis Jackson on tenor saxophone, Frank Robinson on trumpet, Carl Wilson on organ, Pat Martino on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Joe Hadrick on drums. The session was produced by Ozzie Cadena for Prestige Records. One of the standout tracks on More Gravy, a 1964 Prestige album that AllMusic awarded four stars and cited as among Jackson's best, 'Nuther'n Like Thuther'n' showcased the saxophonist's blues-rooted soul-jazz approach in an extended seven-minute groove that also featured early recorded work from the young guitarist Pat Martino, then still performing under the name Pat Azzara. The More Gravy album has been reissued repeatedly and is considered among the finest organ-combo soul-jazz recordings on the Prestige label; 'Nuther'n Like Thuther'n' in particular has been noted for its propulsive bossa-inflected groove and the interplay between Jackson's tenor and Martino's guitar, drawing continued attention from rare-groove and jazz-funk collectors.
