Do It Any Way You Wanna
People's Choice · 1975Recorded in 1974 at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, 'Do It Any Way You Wanna' featured People's Choice, led by keyboardist and vocalist Frank Brunson, with bassist Roger Andrews, guitarist Bobby Eli and musicians associated with the Philadelphia International recording collective. Written and produced by Leon Huff, the recording was arranged by Huff and Brunson, with recording and mixing by Jay Mark. Released in 1975 on TSOP Records, the song became People's Choice's biggest commercial success, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Billboard's soul singles chart. Its insistent bassline, clavinet, wah-wah guitar and repetitive vocal refrain helped establish the emerging Philadelphia dance sound, while its success contributed to the popularity of the group's album Boogie Down U.S.A. The recording became an enduring dance-floor favourite and an influential part of Philadelphia's 1970s musical legacy, remaining popular among DJs and collectors. Its distinctive instrumental groove also provided the foundation for Dillinger's 1977 recording 'Cocaine in My Brain', while subsequent covers, re-edits and reissues introduced the original to later generations.
