Recording

"Beat the Clock" was recorded in 1978 during the No. 1 in Heaven sessions at Musicland Studios in Munich, with additional work in Los Angeles. Giorgio Moroder produced, Jürgen Koppers engineered, Keith Forsey played drums, Dan Wyman programmed synthesizers, and Ron and Russell Mael supplied keyboards and vocals. The 6:43 extended version was issued on the UK 12-inch single in 1979 and was Sparks' first purpose-built extended remix. The single reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart during the band's commercially successful collaboration with Giorgio Moroder. The extended mix became an important document of Sparks' pioneering electronic period and has been repeatedly reissued on collections of their 12-inch mixes. It was restored to No. 1 in Heaven on the album's 40th- and 45th-anniversary editions.
