Sweetie Pie
Stone Alliance · 1976Recorded at Red Gate Studio in Kent, New York across sessions in June 1975 and June 1976, with the core trio of Steve Grossman on tenor saxophone, Gene Perla on bass, and Don Alias on drums and percussion. The session was engineered by Jan Hammer and Gene Perla, assisted by Bob Schachner and Roy Yates. Released on Perla's own PM Records label in 1976, 'Sweetie-Pie' was a centrepiece of Stone Alliance's self-titled debut, a privately pressed fusion record that combined Afro-Cuban percussion, funk rhythm, and post-Coltrane saxophone in a way that sat outside the major-label jazz mainstream and pointed toward the independent spirit of the era's fusion underground. The album became one of the most sought-after jazz-funk private press records of the collector era, with 'Sweetie-Pie' specifically name-checked by the Beastie Boys in their 1994 track 'Root Down,' cementing its canonical status across hip-hop and rare-groove circles. Multiple reissues — including a 2016 Tidal Waves pressing and a 2024 Now-Again edition mastered by Bernie Grundman — testify to the track's enduring cultural reach.
