Stepping Stones

Johnny Harris · 1970
Recording

Johnny Harris recorded 'Stepping Stones' with London session musicians in the spring of 1970, writing, arranging, and conducting the track himself for inclusion in the Columbia film Fragment of Fear and his Warner Bros. debut album Movements, with Daniel Secunda co-producing. Released as a B-side to 'Fragment of Fear' in 1970 and featured on Movements, the track showcased Harris's ability to fuse orchestral arrangement with driving funk and jazz energy at a moment when the boundaries between film scoring, pop, and jazz were being actively dissolved in British studio work. 'Stepping Stones' became a celebrated jazz-dance classic and a prized crate-digger find, receiving a high-profile revival in 1997 when a remix was used in a Levi's 'Kung Fu' television advertisement that significantly boosted the brand globally; it remains one of the most sought-after British jazz-funk instrumentals of its era.
