Which Way Is Up

Stargard · 1977
Recording

Recorded in 1977 at Sound Factory West in Los Angeles for Stargard’s debut album and the Which Way Is Up? film tie-in. Mark Davis produced the release, with Leonard Jackson credited as recording engineer on the original album notes. As the main theme from the Richard Pryor film Which Way Is Up?, the single became Stargard’s signature record. It reached No. 1 on the US R&B chart, No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 19 in the UK. The song remained the group’s best-known recording and stayed in circulation through later reissues and covers. Marcia Hines recorded a version in 1999, keeping the track present beyond its original chart run.
