Double Dutch Bus

Frankie Smith · 1980
Recording

Frankie Smith recorded Double Dutch Bus in 1980 at Alpha International Studios in Philadelphia, co-writing and producing it with Bill Bloom. Engineer Gene Leone recorded the track, which incorporated a bus horn and neighborhood children's vocal exchanges. The record combined jump-rope chants and Philadelphia bus-travel references with distinctive invented slang. It topped Billboard's soul singles chart for four weeks in 1981 and crossed over to the Hot 100. Its vocal exchanges were sampled in Missy Elliott's Gossip Folks, while its wordplay influenced later rap slang. Raven-Symoné covered the song in 2008 for her self-titled album and the film College Road Trip.
