Four Play (feat. Maceo Parker)
Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns · 1977Recorded in 1977 at United Sound Studios in Detroit and Hollywood Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, 'Four Play' brought together Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on saxophone and members of George Clinton's P-Funk collective. Produced by George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, the sessions featured Bernie Worrell, Glen Goins, Garry Shider and additional horns from the Brecker Brothers, with engineering by Jim Vitti and Jim Callon. Released in 1977 on the album A Blow for Me, a Toot to You, 'Four Play' demonstrated Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker's transition from James Brown's band into the Parliament-Funkadelic collective. Written by George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Glen Goins, the eight-minute instrumental became a distinctive showcase for the group's horn arrangements, although its suggestive title restricted radio airplay when issued as a single. 'Four Play' became one of the Horny Horns' most enduring recordings, particularly through its use as sample material in subsequent hip-hop and dance productions. Its reputation has been sustained by P-Funk collectors, DJs and reissues, including a 1993 remix and later archival editions of A Blow for Me, a Toot to You.
