Nappy Dugout
Funkadelic · 1973Recorded during 1972–1973 at United Sound Systems in Detroit and Manta Sound in Toronto, Nappy Dugout featured George Clinton on vocals, Garry Shider and Ron Bykowski on guitars, Cordell Boogie Mosson on bass, Bernie Worrell on keyboards and original Funkadelic drummer Tiki Fulwood. Written by Clinton, Mosson and Shider, the recording was produced by Clinton, with engineering credited to Lee DeCarlo and Jerry Estes. Released on Westbound Records in 1973 as the opening track of Funkadelic's fifth studio album Cosmic Slop, Nappy Dugout established the record's rhythmic intensity through its driving bassline, interlocking guitars, percussion and layered vocals. The composition represented the group's increasingly focused ensemble playing and their transition towards the sound that would characterise later Parliament-Funkadelic recordings. Nappy Dugout remains an important recording from Funkadelic's early Westbound catalogue, particularly for its bass-driven arrangement and Tiki Fulwood's distinctive drumming. Its continued presence on reissues of Cosmic Slop has preserved the recording as part of George Clinton's influential body of work and the development of Parliament-Funkadelic's musical identity.
