The World Is a Ghetto
George Benson · 1977Recorded between August and November 1976 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, 'The World Is a Ghetto' featured George Benson on lead vocals and guitar, Stanley Banks on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, Phil Upchurch on rhythm guitar, Jorge Dalto on clavinet and piano, Ronnie Foster on electric piano and synthesizer, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. The recording was produced by Tommy LiPuma, engineered by Al Schmitt and orchestrated by Claus Ogerman. Released in 1977 on Warner Bros. Records as part of Benson's album In Flight, the track reinterpreted War's 1972 composition as an extended nine-minute performance. Its prominent bassline, rhythmic guitar interplay, sophisticated keyboard arrangements and Benson's expressive vocals demonstrated his ability to transform socially conscious material into an expansive ensemble recording during his commercial breakthrough period. The recording remains a celebrated interpretation of War's original composition and an important example of George Benson's late-1970s work. Its extended instrumental passages, melodic guitar playing and rhythmic arrangements have maintained its appeal among DJs, collectors and listeners, while the continued popularity of In Flight has preserved its place within Benson's catalogue.
