Recording

Sylvester recorded Stars for the 1979 Fantasy album of the same name at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and Island Studios in London. Harvey Fuqua and Sylvester produced the album, with Patrick Cowley writing the title track and contributing its electronic club arrangement. The song formed part of the Stars album sequence that reached number 4 on Billboard's disco chart in 1979. It extended Sylvester's post-Mighty Real club dominance and deepened his collaboration with Patrick Cowley. Stars remains a key Sylvester club recording from the Fantasy period. Its Cowley-linked electronic drive helped connect Sylvester's late-1970s disco sound to the hi-NRG records that followed in the early 1980s.
