Do You Wanna Funk?

Do You Wanna Funk?

Sylvester · 1982
Recording

It was recorded in 1982 in San Francisco during Sylvester’s Megatone-era sessions with Patrick Cowley, the producer and co-writer who had become central to Sylvester’s late-period sound. Album credits tie the recording to Independent Sound and Starlight Sound, with mixing at The Automatt. The single became one of Sylvester’s defining post-disco records, powered by Cowley’s hi-NRG production and closely associated with the San Francisco gay club scene. It was released on Megatone in the year of Cowley’s death and helped carry Sylvester’s dance-floor profile into the 1980s. The track has endured as a club classic and a landmark of queer dance music, later recognized by Slant Magazine among the best dance songs of all time. Its reach extended into pop culture through later film placements and continued reissues and remix culture.
