Recording

Nas recorded the track for I Am... with DJ Premier at D&D Recording and Hit Factory in New York City, with Eddie Sancho engineering and Dexter Thibou assisting. Premier also mixed the record at D&D Studios in New York City. Released as a single from I Am..., it reunited Nas with DJ Premier and drew strong praise for its return to the pair’s classic, hard-edged sound. AllMusic singled it out as a standout and described Premier as saving the day on the record. The track became one of Nas’s most imitated singles, inspiring stylistic echoes, freestyles, and homage records from artists including Memphis Bleek, Royce da 5'9", Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Apathy, and Wale. Its video also became a long-running fan favorite and the song later appeared in NBA 2K18.
