TLC · 1999Recording
Recorded at D.A.R.P. in Atlanta, Georgia, with Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs producing and writing alongside Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle; Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes added lyrics for the rap version. Released as the lead single from FanMail, it became TLC’s first single from the album and returned the group to the top of the charts, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. The song’s direct takedown of deadbeat men made it a defining pop anthem of 1999. The track remained one of TLC’s signature songs and inspired a response record, Sporty Thievz’s “No Pigeons,” while its central phrase entered everyday slang. Later pop writers and artists continued to reference or interpolate it, including Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”
