Recording

Recorded at INS Recording in New York City and released on Vintertainment’s VTI-002 12-inch. Vincent Davis produced and wrote the record, with drum programming by Davis and Guy Vaughn; Chuck Chillout and Donald D served as creative consultants, and Craig Bevan and Mark Mandelbaum engineered it. Released in 1983, it became the B-Boys’ best-known record and a fixture of early New York hip-hop. Billboard listed it as a Vintertainment 12-inch single, and it quickly circulated as a breakdance and party staple. The track became one of the most sampled records from the early electro era, appearing in well over 60 later songs. Its vocal hooks and drum accents kept it in circulation through rap, dance, and DJ culture long after the original release.
