Break Dance

West Street Mob · 1983
Recording

West Street Mob recorded the track for Sugar Hill Records in 1983, with Joey Robinson Jr. credited as producer. It is built around the “Apache” breakbeat and the group’s electro vocal style. The song captured the early-1980s breakdance craze and stood as one of Sugar Hill’s signature electro records. It became the title track of the group’s 1983 release and a defining example of the label’s b-boy sound. The track was widely recycled by later artists and is listed by WhoSampled as having been sampled in many records, including The Prodigy’s “What Evil Lurks.” It also remained visible in pop culture through later uses such as Judson Laipply’s Evolution of Dance.
