I Got the... (2006 Remastered Version)
Labi Siffre · 1975Recorded at The Music Centre in Wembley for Labi Siffre's 1975 album Remember My Song, I Got The... featured Siffre on vocals and electric piano, Chas Hodges on guitar, Dave Peacock on bass, Ian Wallace on drums, Big Jim Sullivan on lead guitar and Alan Branscombe on percussion. Produced by Derek Lawrence and Big Jim Sullivan, the recording was engineered by Dick Plant. Released in 1975, I Got The... opened Siffre's fifth studio album with an extended arrangement that moves from a restrained introduction into a driving instrumental groove. The composition showcased Siffre's songwriting and keyboard playing alongside the musicianship of Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock, who subsequently became widely known as Chas & Dave. I Got The... achieved renewed international recognition through hip-hop sampling, particularly Jay-Z's Streets Is Watching in 1997 and Eminem's breakthrough single My Name Is in 1999, produced by Dr. Dre. Its distinctive instrumental passage became one of the most recognisable samples in popular music, prompting a standalone single release in 2003 and renewed interest in Siffre's catalogue through subsequent reissues.
