Carly Simon · 1972
Recording

Recorded in 1972 at Trident Studios in London during the No Secrets sessions. Carly Simon wrote the song and recorded it with producer Richard Perry, Klaus Voormann on bass, Jim Gordon on drums, Jimmy Ryan on guitar, Paul Buckmaster on orchestration, and Mick Jagger, Vicki Brown, and Liza Strike on backing vocals. Released by Elektra in November 1972, You're So Vain became Simon's breakthrough single and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in early 1973. Its sharply written portrait of vanity and the public mystery around its subject made it one of the era's most discussed singer-songwriter hits. The song remains Simon's signature recording and one of the defining pop singles of the 1970s. Its lyric, bass introduction, and unresolved subject have kept it prominent through covers, samples, critical lists, and later cultural references.
