Everything but the Girl · 1996
Recording

Recorded in 1995 during the Walking Wounded sessions at Little Joey's, Milo, and Strongroom studios in London. Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt made the track as part of Everything but the Girl's post-Missing shift into electronic production, with Watt producing. Released by Virgin in 1996, Single was the third single from Walking Wounded and reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart. Its spare breakbeat setting and direct lyric reinforced the album's move from acoustic pop toward club-informed songwriting. Single remains one of the key songs from Everything but the Girl's mid-1990s electronic period. It helped define Walking Wounded as the album that turned the commercial success of the Missing remix into a fully integrated new sound.
