The Sun In A Box
Max Cooper · 2024Max Cooper spent approximately two years developing The Sun In A Box, assembling nearly 200 layers of sound from around 15 hours of synthesizer improvisations. Built around a repeating one-bar motif, the composition was inspired by an anonymous contribution expressing a desire to hold the sun in a box, collected for his audience-driven On Being project. Released on 4 September 2024 as the first single from Cooper's album On Being, the ten-minute composition introduced a project built around anonymous reflections on human experience. Its intricate layering, playful synthesizer sequences and dramatic contrasts between restrained passages and bursts of brightness reflected Cooper's ambition to translate personal emotions into elaborate musical structures. The track became a centrepiece of On Being, released in February 2025, and exemplifies Cooper's integration of audience participation, electronic composition and audiovisual art. Its accompanying visual work by Andy Lomas extends the project's exploration of human perception, while its extended arrangement demonstrates Cooper's approach to transforming minimal musical ideas into expansive compositions.
