Recording

of Montreal recorded “Gronlandic Edit” during the sessions for Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, which Kevin Barnes largely made alone after returning to Athens, Georgia from Norway. Barnes wrote, performed and produced the track, with engineering and mixing credited to Barnes and mastering handled by Greg Calbi. Released by Polyvinyl in 2007 on Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, it became one of the album’s defining tracks and was issued as a single in 2008. Its clipped rhythm, falsetto hook and inward-looking lyric helped frame the album’s shift from ornate psych-pop into sharper, more danceable studio pop. The track remains one of of Montreal’s signature recordings and a central song from the band’s most acclaimed album. Its continuing presence in live sets, compilations and indie-era retrospectives has kept it closely associated with Kevin Barnes’ mid-2000s creative peak.
