Recording

Kevin Barnes wrote and recorded the album largely in Norway and Athens, Georgia during an intense personal period, after marrying and moving to Norway and then finishing the remaining songs in Athens following a split with Nina Barnes. The record also drew on contributions from Bryan Poole, Jamey Huggins, Heather McIntosh, Nina Grottland, and Alabee Barnes. The song appeared on Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, the album that marked of Montreal’s turn toward a more autobiographical, synth-driven sound. The record was widely praised on release and helped define the band’s career peak. Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is now treated as of Montreal’s landmark album, and “Cato As A Pun” remains part of the record most often revisited by listeners and critics. Its continued presence in reissues and streaming-era catalog editions keeps the track in circulation as part of the band’s signature era.
