When a Fire Starts to Burn
Disclosure · 2013Produced by brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence at their home studio setup in Reigate, Surrey, the track was built around vocal samples from motivational speaker Eric Thomas's "Rope-A-Dope" speech, which Howard Lawrence found by searching for a "motivational speaker from Harlem" after failing to secure Kendrick Lamar or A$AP Rocky for the album. Released in May 2013 as the fourth single from Disclosure's debut album Settle, the track served as the album's mission statement and dancefloor centrepiece, with Thomas's rhythmically chopped exhortations about passion and commitment becoming an anthem for the UK house revival. Settle debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and was nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The track has accumulated over 118 million Spotify streams and endures as one of Disclosure's most iconic productions, with the Eric Thomas vocal formula proving so successful that the duo returned to sample him on the title track of their 2020 album Energy. It was also used prominently in the CW television series The 100.
