Rub You the Right Way

Johnny Gill recorded 'Rub You the Right Way' for his self-titled 1990 album on Motown Records, produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface, who crafted the track at their Atlanta-based production operation during the height of their commercial dominance as a production duo. Released as the lead single from Johnny Gill in 1990, the track reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, establishing Gill as a solo star in his own right beyond his membership in the reformed New Edition. The track is regarded as one of L.A. Reid and Babyface's defining New Jack Swing-era productions, and it secured Gill's place among the leading male R&B vocalists of the early 1990s, with the album going on to achieve double platinum certification.
