The Maytals · 1965
Recording

Recorded in Kingston and overseen by producer Sonia Pottinger during the Maytals’ mid-1960s ska period. It was issued alongside the pairing “Joy and Jean” and reflected the group’s post-Coxsone Dodd studio work. A bright ska single from the Maytals’ early independent run, it captured the group working with one of Jamaica’s key female producers at a time when their sound was helping define the genre’s first wave. It later became a favored deep cut on Trojan and other anthology releases. The song has remained in circulation through later compilations of classic Jamaican ska, keeping it in the Maytals’ archival canon rather than their hit-parade canon. Its continued reissue history has sustained its place in the group’s early catalog.
