The Return
Cutty Ranks · 1996It was recorded for Cutty Ranks’ 1996 album Six Million Ways to Die, with the album tracking at Digital B Recording Studsio, Fashion, Grove Music Studio in Ocho Rios, and Mixing Lab Recording Studio in Kingston, Jamaica. The track is credited to Cutty Ranks and Bobby Konders. It opened Six Million Ways to Die, the Priority Records album that marked Cutty Ranks’ move into the American major-label market in 1996. The song helped frame the record’s hard-edged dancehall stance from the start. The track later found life in jungle and drum-and-bass circles, including a 1995 Bizzy B and Ruffkutt remix and a 2001 sampling connection through Krinjah. It remains one of the album cuts most associated with the era’s dancehall crossover into UK rave culture.
