Fattie Bum Bum

Carl Malcom · 1975
Recording

Carl Malcolm cut the song in Kingston in 1975 with producer Clive Chin, backed by Skin, Flesh and Bones. Malcolm said Chin had a studio upstairs at Randy's record shop and brought in the band to back him. Released in 1975, the single became Malcolm's best-known hit and reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. It spent eight weeks on the chart and helped turn the record into a substantial reggae crossover success in Britain. The song remained one of Malcolm's signature recordings and was later covered by The Diversions, which also charted in the UK. Its chorus was also interpolated by Die Antwoord on "Fatty Boom Boom," extending the song's reach into later pop and hip-hop contexts.
