You Can’t Hide From Yourself
Teddy Pendergrass · 1977Recorded in Philadelphia at Sigma Sound Studios for Teddy Pendergrass’s 1977 solo debut after his move from Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. The session was cut under the Philadelphia International team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff with the label’s in-house Philly Sound production setup. The track opened Pendergrass’s first solo album with a forceful, dance-floor-ready statement and quickly became one of the record’s best-known album cuts. It helped define the sound and persona that made his solo launch a major Philadelphia International success. The song has remained one of Pendergrass’s signature early solo recordings and a durable Philly soul/disco staple. Its groove and hook have kept it in circulation through later remixes, compilations, and soundtrack use.
